Pench Tiger Reserve

AbhiShri | | Monday, June 13th, 2011

Tour planning involves a lot of time & efforts (in this case, wildlife outing) – ticket booking, accommodation and lot many other logistic related things. While doing all these things enthusiastically, your mind starts smelling the jungle wood,  listen to bird chirps, imagine the mammals posing for you long before you are actually there in the jungle. The actual experience may not always be what you imagine or anticipate, but nevertheless, experience of any jungle outing is special by its own way !

Many people visit Indian Tiger Reserves mainly (if not, only) for taking a photograph of this apex predator – Royal Bengal Tiger – moving freely, gracefully along lake shore or resting near a water-hole.  If not a photograph, they feel happy even at having a glimpse of this Royal animal – fighting hard to sustain the existence – in his homeland.  However, genuine nature lovers and photographers understand that Jungle Safari isn’t only about tigers. There are lot many other mammals, birds, insects, butterflies, trees to experience and enjoy. After all, this graceful animal – Tiger – will make his appearance only as per his wish…we just have got to make best possible calculations for the sighting and hope for the best ! And most of the times – in this process – the alarm calls of Deer’s , Sambar’s, Langoor’s Or just the bird calls all around – breaking the silence of deep jungles – gives you immense enjoyment !!

On the border of north-eastern Maharashtra and southern Madhya Pradesh, lies the Pench National Park – named after the river Pench (approx 120 km from Nagpur). After my last visit to this beautiful place in May 2009, we 13 members visited Pench recently in June 2011. Monsoon was around the corner and hence it was going to be a crucial period for, apart from Camera safety; unstable and changing weather would also have a significant impact on overall sighting. Fortunately, we got decent sighting of mammals and birds…but moreover, personally, I enjoyed the “Pench Jungle” more than my last visit!!
