Dapoli and around…

AbhiShri | | Monday, April 25th, 2011

Place – Dapoli (District Ratnagiri) – About 230 km from Mumbai.

Date – 22nd to 24th April 2011

There are some places on Earth which doesn’t have an aura of city glamour around them. They remain simple, calm and yet extraordinarily beautiful with a potential to draw a large group of people  towards them. India is blessed with numerous such places and Kokan surely has quite a few of them.  Even after being quite close to my native place, Shrivardhan, I never visited Dapoli untill last weekend. Sometimes you just tend to ignore some places. And I must admit, Dapoli was one such ignored place by me (for no reason). However, we decided to spend the long weekend of 22nd to 24th April at Dapoli and visit the places around… and it turned out to be such a fantastic experience!!! I just felt, if this is the enjoyment one can have in hot summer, how great it would be in post-monsoon and winter season….?? I cannot wait….I want to visit this region again…and again 🙂 !!

About 2 km from Dapoli ST stand, in the village Gimhavane, is this beautiful home-stay run and maintained by Oak family. It has 3 spacious rooms with good forest around. The food served is delicious and hospitality is nice.

Indian Grey Hornbill, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Brown-headed Barbet, White cheeked barbet, Coppersmith barbet, Orange-headed ground thrush, Iora, Indian Coucal, Red whiskered bulbul, Rufous woodpecker,  Bramhiny Kite, Purple rumped Sunbird, Magpie Robin, Tailor bird etc can be spotted around.

The photo may not really give an idea of this beautifully located, ancient Lord Shiva temple (about 1250 years old, known as – Vyaghreshwar temple) in village Asud (about 10 km from Dapoli). This is a kind of temple I really like visiting – absolutely serene!!

About 25 km from Dapoli, is situated an ancient temple of Lord Ganesha at a beautiful place – Anjarle. The Ganesh temple is known as “kadyavarcha Ganpati” (because of it’s location). Enroute, one can see this beautiful Anjarle beach !!! (Sorry… there was no way I could prevent the electric pole 🙁 )

  1. Hi Abhi

Very good pics again. I had visited a small village near Dapoli loong time ago but I didn’t have a chance to visit Dapoli. It sure looks like a lovely place. Hopefully I will get a chance to visit Malvan and more places in Kokan some times soon.

  10. You could have easily got away with electric poles with some photo editing software.. that would have been perfect picture..

  11. Thanks Vishal… Frankly, I was a bit lazy doing photo editing to remove it :-).

  13. The photo of the mouth of the river is exceptional – the maiden river is impatiently hurrying to meet the manly sea.
